A turbodiesel derivative of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class was always a given and the German manufacturer has decided to reveal this variant to kick off the new year. Taking the G350d will feature the brand’s recently introduced 3,0-litre straight-six ‘OM 656’ as an alternative to the petrol-powered twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 G500.

The G350d delivers 210 kW and 600 N.m of torque to all four wheels through the nine-speed ‘9G-tronic’ torque converter  transmission, allowing it to sprint to 0-100 km/h in 7,4 seconds and reach a top speed of 199 km/h. It also happens to be the most efficient G-Class of all time with its claimed combined fuel consumption figure of 9,8 L/100 km.

Mercedes-Benz promises that the G350d will serve up greater levels of comfort and mechanical refinement thanks to a smoother turbodiesel engine and subdued exhaust system; both of which will produce less in the way of noise and vibration. Actively controlled engine mounts further dampen vibrations with settings that adjust at different speeds.

Although local specification is pending, the G350d will also be better specced than the previous model with standard trimmings such as leather seats, an Alcantara instrument panel and open-pore wood. It can also be had with ‘Exclusive Interior Plus’ diamond quilting upholstery.
